Happiness is the Truth
Music is a safe kind of high. ~Jimi Hendrix
Every once in a while, I will be in the midst of having an experience and it will suddenly hit me me that this experience is more than meets the eye. Something will wash over me, an emotion, a realization… and I’ll know that a deeper understanding is blanketing my heart. That happened to me on Sunday evening.
I went to The Hollywood Bowl with my husband, my sister and my brother-in-law to attend the Bruno Mars concert. I was excited but there was something a little more special about this concert than what I was expecting. Maybe it was the profound history and perfect acoustics of The Hollywood Bowl. Maybe it was the unique and special way you can picnic in the open air before the concert. Maybe it was that the music was especially upbeat and danceable. Or maybe it was the awesome fireworks show and confetti shot into the air during the closing song.
All I know is that all of those things added up to one very fantastic evening.
And while all this was going on, something occurred to me: we should put more emphasis on the importance of fun in our lives. Music has the power to transport you. It gets into your body and breathes life into you. If you can just let yourself go and dance or sing or do whatever moves you, the pure and overwhelming joy is astounding.
Bruno Mars is a fantastically energetic performer. His show was electric and I absolutely loved it. But I have to say, there was one moment that will stick with me for a long time.
Pharrell Williams opened the show. His set was really fun and it was all building to that moment when he was going to break into his huge hit “Happy”. Okay, granted, that song may be a bit over-exposed at the moment, but there is no denying its ability to bring a smile to your face.
I get so goofy and giddy when I hear that song on the radio so I don’t think I can properly describe how it felt to hear it live, surrounded by 15,000 people all dancing together, but I will try: just plain fun.
Luckily, my husband took this little video of me and my sister boogying down (with our 15,000 friends). I especially love the girl next to us at the end. Every time I watch this, I smile. Hope it makes you smile too. Come on people, let’s have more fun!
Happiness is the truth.
