A Matter of Perspective
“YOU MOVED FROM CALIFORNIA TO MINNESOTA? WHY??”
That is the question we have been asked most frequently this summer. Followed by, “Do you know how cold it gets here?”
I was even told at a dinner party by a (I’m assuming) well-meaning fellow guest that I would need “lots of wine and Prozac” to get through the winter here after living in California.
None of these questions/comments have come from friends, mostly it’s like the checker at the supermarket who’s trying to make conversation who says these things. The people we’ve met who have moved from California to Minnesota absolutely love it.
It just goes to show you that life is all about perspective.
If you’re miserable, you can be miserable anywhere. And if you’re content, you’ll be content anywhere. It comes down to looking for beauty. Because when you are constantly on the lookout for things that inspire and delight, you will find them. I’m sure you can even find them on a cold, snowy day.
Truth be told, my kids and husband and I are all looking forward to the seasons. We can’t wait for that crispness of fall and the changing of the leaves. And I know we will completely geek out when the first snow happens. We’ve been told by neighbors that we can ice skate on our neighborhood ponds. And a white Christmas?! Get out of here… so excited for that!
And who doesn’t love to shop? Shopping for boots, jackets and sweaters has been a whole new world. I have the credit card bills to prove it.
It’s not that Minnesota is better or that California is better, it just boils down to one thing: change is good. When you have a fresh start, you get a fresh perspective. And that’s fun.
We have become really good at trying new things this summer. We’ve shaken ourselves out of a routine so everything is exciting and we find ourselves saying over and over, “Well, why not?”.
So I’ll check back with you in February. Who knows? Maybe I will need a lot of wine to get me through, but hey, I like wine. So far, we’ve found so much beauty in Minnesota. I think we’ll be just fine.
