Have you ever been to a place that immediately makes you feel inspired in every way? That makes you feel warm and glowy and magical? Where people are authentic and earthy and welcoming? Where everything and everyone seems to reflect the scenic beauty and rich history of the sacred land?
That’s exactly how New Mexico feels to me. The Land of Enchantment. Tierra del Encanto.
I was there this weekend for an amazing music/art/poetry fundraiser event for my cousin Keith Sanchez’ New Mexico Academy of Rock & Blues. The event itself was wonderfully successful fusing a variety of arts and artists together and the feeling of community was overwhelming. But more than just the event, the beauty and culture of New Mexico embraced me warmly.
My parents were both born and raised in New Mexico in a small town called Belen and then moved to California where they raised my 7 siblings and myself. We would spend time there every summer so I was definitely brought up with New Mexico in my blood.
I was only there for two days this time but the crispness of the air, the gold of the leaves, the spiciness of the food, the warmth of family and the magical inspiration of my fellow artists was enough to fill my soul for a long while.
Gracias Nuevo Mexico. I can’t wait to see you again soon.
