This past Saturday I dove head first into the soothing waters of teaching art. Not just any kind of art but art journaling which I have recently become extremely passionate about. Ten awesome people joined me in my back yard as we ventured into the world of heartfelt creativity.
I’ve written about art journaling here a lot but I cannot say enough about its remarkable powers of self-discovery. Saturday was undeniable proof that it is a compelling method of connecting; with your inner voice and with others.
It was a gorgeous, sunny day. Perfect for relaxing and making art.
We used lots of different techniques to express ourselves. The biggest trick to creating authentically from the heart is to stay in the moment. Staying spontaneous and not over-planning your composition keeps you connected to your artistic impulses.
Art can be beautiful, magical therapy.
We also took time to share and did exercises that helped us discover things about ourselves and each other.
The exercises helped us each pinpoint a word that was especially meaningful to us.
The connections we made felt deep and moving.
And those connections are what helped fuel the art that ended up on our pages.
At the end of the day, we talked about the process and how it felt to let ourselves jump freely into creativity.
By taking the emphasis off the final product and focusing on the process of making art, I think everyone would agree that the art they ultimately created surprised them with its abstract but powerful beauty.
We created amazingly personal works of art, but most importantly, we let the process reveal things to us about ourselves.
A beautiful day. Beautiful people. Beautiful connections. Remarkably beautiful works of art.
The next two workshops are already on the calendar if you want to be a part of them. September 21 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and November 9 again here in San Clemente, CA. More info and registrations links coming soon.
I feel so strongly that my journey with art journaling is just beginning. I hope I am able to continue sharing it with anyone and everyone who feels the desire to connect, to discover and to create.
