Here in Southern California, we have been experiencing a VERY hot October. I don’t just mean an Indian-summer-warm-and-gorgeous kind of hot… I mean a sweltering-sweaty-and-suffocating kind of hot! Like it was 91 degrees at the beach on Sunday. That’s unusually hot for anytime of the year for us. So believe me when I say, getting in the mood for fall has not been easy.
Finally today, we woke up to fog and a tiny drizzle and cloudy skies. It might sound crazy, but it’s a welcome change. It may not stick around for long but I thought today would be the perfect day to share some of the ways I’ve been trying to get in the mood for all things Autumn.
I mean honestly, I may need a new pair of boots like I need a hole in the head but for some reason, as soon as the calendar changes to September, I start browsing for boots. This pair of Frye boots has been on my radar for quite some time. Just might have to hit the “add to cart” button one of these days soon.
DARK HAIR AND RED LIPS
I have spent a lot of time at the pool and the beach with my kids this summer and my hair has sort of morphed into a lighter shade of “summer honey brown” which sounds fabulous until you get closer and see the grays that are starting to poke out. I have a hair appointment on Saturday so I’m excited to get myself back to a dark chestnut brown. I also love red lipstick in the fall and this photo of Spanish star Paz Vega makes me want to wear red dresses, red lipstick and pretend to look as gorgeous as she does.
This time of year we are bombarded with all things pumpkin. I’m not much of a pumpkin pie eater but I do love a savory pumpkin dish with sage. I have a recipe similar to this one that I always make in October and it is to die for. Try it, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
COZY CROCHET SLIPPERS
I love to browse Etsy. You really can find some amazingly fantastic handmade items. I just purchased these slippers from SimplePleasurebyJean because I was completely blown away by how cozy they look and also so cute! They haven’t arrived yet but I will keep you posted on how I like them once they get here. Don’t they make you want to put your feet up, watch a movie and eat buttered popcorn?
I am a child of the seventies so I’m a sucker for a drapey, boho poncho. This one from Free People has piqued my interest. Haven’t bought it but I’ve pinned it to my Pinterest board so I can look at it and keep thinking. Will I love it or will I feel like the “Outlaw Josey Wales” in it? Hmmm… remains to be seen.
A few more miscellaneous things that always get me in the Fall mood are watching “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” and making caramel apples. My Mom always made caramel apples in the fall and I try to always make them for my kids too (as an aside, my Mom also made popcorn balls but as it turns out… those things are not my favorite, not to mention the teeth you might lose when you bite into one… that’s a tradition I’m leaving behind).
And watching Charlie Brown is fun but I forgot how excessively the word “stupid” is used in it. My kids say “Oops that’s not a nice word” every single time it is said because that’s what I always say to them. It’s actually pretty funny.
So that’s my Fall roundup! Hope you are enjoying your Fall wherever you are in the world! Happy October!
