My entire summer up until now has been filled with home renovation and redecorating. I told you here about the chaos of having a house turned upside down with two kids out of school for the summer. Ugh. In fact, double, triple ugh!
Through this process I’ve realized that having workers in my house for 4 weeks is not my favorite thing. But I’ve also realized that picking out paint swatches, lamps and home accessories DEFINITELY IS one of my favorite things.
It was fun to apply my creativity in a different way and put together some fresh decor for my house. My husband and I have similar taste when it comes to our home so when I come up with a wild color for the wall or an out-of-the-box way to do something, he’s usually on board.
I am so happy to report that our home renovation is finally done! I feel enormously happy with how it all turned out so I thought I’d share some of the ideas with you and some of the inspiration for how we put it all together.
The big projects were replacing our hardwood floors, putting in new white kitchen cabinets and creating a new mantel for our fireplace. Once the big things were done, we could then focus on paint colors and accessories. Aren’t those flowers so cool and dramatic? I think fresh flowers are such a great and inexpensive way to add interest to a room or table. Trader Joe’s has a creative selection of flowers so I try to rotate them regularly.
Someone gave us this cool tip that you can replace your recessed lighting with these nifty converters that make it easy to add pendants. My husband Greg was in charge of this project and I can’t believe how easy it was and what a difference it makes in our kitchen.
We replaced the carpet in our living with the new hardwoods and we painted it a fresh color. Basically it needed a whole re-do. I found this rug at Ikea and based the whole room around its bold statement. Since this rug has such a lot going on, I had to keep everything fairly simple but I think the rug really makes the room. I kept all the same furniture and just updated it with new pillows and slipcovers.
Speaking of slipcovers I have to tell you about this sofa. We bought this sofa at Ikea in 1996! Since then, we have slipcovered it 3 TIMES! First it was gold, then it was red and now we’ve given it new life with a natural white slipcover. It’s amazing to me that they still sell the same sofa with the same slipcovers so basically this has been quite a valuable purchase.
I needed some new art for above the bookcase and well, you know, this is when being an artist comes in quite handy. I had this idea to cover a canvas with the lyrics to a song that is very meaningful to my husband and me.
Here’s a closer look. I think it helps to modernize the room and tie in the new color scheme.
The basic new color scheme for this room was black and white but adding different shades of white, beige and gold just gave it dimension while keeping it all in harmony.
I personally think one of the most important things you can do while decorating your home is keep your personality in it. I bought this red lamp years ago at a dusty old antique store in San Diego. I am in love with the exotic Moroccan feel of this lamp and I kept it in the room for a pop of color. People always tease me about its “bordello-like” qualities but I don’t care. I love the gorgeous color and shape. Stick to your guns people!
We kept the decor in our dining room the same but the floors just bring it such a fresh look. I got a little wild with the paint in this room but I still love the bold look of it.
I bought this hand-embroidered table runner in Mexico years ago and its one of my favorite things in the room.
I think our absolute favorite thing in the house is the new fireplace mantel. When the mantel designer heard what we wanted, he scratched his head and looked very skeptical “green subway tiles huh? …ooookkkaaay” But I think it’s now the centerpiece of the room (and I think we won him over with the idea in the end). It was great fun finding accessories to bring the whole look together (again, got a good deal on the art… <smiley face>)
I like to mix old and new for an eclectic feeling. And bright pops of color always add visual interest.
So there you have it! Our home renovation is done. Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts and take risks in your home! Make it personal and meaningful by mixing your old favorites with new fresh ideas. Your home should reflect who you are. I’m feeling so happy and cozy in our new surroundings (and so happy to have our house back). Now we are ready to just relax and enjoy the rest of the summer.
