Has this ever happened to you? Something small kinda nudges you to make a change in your life but you’re busy, you’re overwhelmed, you’ve got other things to think about, so you ignore it.
Then the message comes to you again, this time in a different form. Then again and again until you are forced to admit “Okay, Universe, I get it. I will make the change already!”
That is exactly what has happened to me recently with regard to health. Nothing major but a few health concerns at the end of last year had me realizing that I probably don’t put enough focus on my health or the health of my family. Even though I do consider myself a mindful eater and always shop organic and local… sugar, gluten and processed foods were really creeping into our world in a big way.
I really do believe that what we put into our bodies is terribly important. Especially for children. I’m no expert, but I can tell you for sure that when I change my children’s diet to limit sugar and gluten, I can see a distinct change in mood and behavior.
So at the beginning of the year, I made the change permanent. No more fake foods. Real, fresh, wonderful healthy food is our focus. Luckily we are not dealing with allergies or medical issues so I am not rigid about it. I’m realistic. I know they get treats at school sometimes and at birthday parties and at play dates. I just figured, why do they need to get it at home too?
I’ve always loved to cook. I consider it another creative outlet. So the challenge of cooking delicious food that is sugar and gluten-free has been a fun undertaking for me. And let me just tell you…. if you dip a date into almond butter… you don’t need another piece of candy in your life. It is a delicious, healthy sweet treat.
In order to help me along the way, I am doing a 10-day sugar detox with Lacy Young who is an amazing health coach. I am learning so much about how to fill our kitchen and our bodies with healthy, delicious options. My kids have not missed the granola bars or packaged fish crackers. Children are so adaptable. They really surprise me.
Another great resource I recently came across was a local farm called Villa Romano Green Farms. For 5 years they have been growing and selling produce right up the street from me and I had no idea. It’s so much more convenient than getting to our local farmer’s market where the parking is impossible. I just pre-order a basket of whatever produce they have and pick it up every Saturday.
I love getting a surprise basket of produce. It appeals to my creative way of cooking. I pretend I’m on my own little episode of “Chopped”… fava beans, arugula flowers and satsumas…. GO!
Sugar Fact: In 1700, the average person consumed about 4 pounds of sugar per year. Today, the average American consumes one-half pound of sugar PER DAY (um, that’s 180 lbs of sugar per year). It’s not hard to understand why there is an obesity epidemic going on in this country.
These facts blow my mind and make me really passionate about making these changes in my home. I just thought I’d share in case you have been receiving the same kinds of messages. Surprisingly, these changes have not been that difficult to make and the reward is so worth it.
So Universe, are you listening? Next time you send me a message, I promise I will act a little sooner. You have a way of always being right!
